Qormi is the second-largest town on the Islands. It has both residential and light industrial areas, but the town's core is still characterised by alleys and narrow streets. The town became the first place where imported goods were stored due to its position near the Grand Harbour.

Wheat was one of the staple imports and, over the years, windmills sprung up in the town and it soon developed a thriving bread-making industry. Qormi has been known as the centre of bread-making since the time of the Knights of St. John. They named it 'Casal Fornaro', the bakers' village, and it still is today.

The town is also known for its Easter processions, especially on Good Friday, when participants wear biblical costumes, and Easter Sunday, on which a procession is held with the tradition of running with the statue of Risen Christ in various roads in the parish.
