ABOUT TARXIEN

Tarxien, located southeast of Valletta, is known mostly for the Tarxien Temples, a prehistoric temple complex dating back to the Copper Age and one of Malta’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The oldest part of the Tarxien Temples might have been built around 3600 BCE, making it one of the world’s oldest freestanding structures.

The town itself was important in later centuries, particularly in Roman times, but it remained more or less a backwater over the millennia. Like nearby Paola, the town began to develop in the early 20th century with the growth of the dockyards. Locals are known as 'Tarxinizi'.
