Marsalforn is a popular fishing village on the north coast of Gozo. The village lies between the hilltop towns of Xagħra and Żebbuġ. The name originates from the Arabic word for port or bay, ‘marsa’. In the summertime, Marsalforn is vibrant and teeming with locals and tourists. The winter months see a more peaceful and quieter pace of life.
Marsalforn has become the island’s premier diving locale, and the seafront is scattered with restaurants and bars overlooking its sandy beach. There are plenty of parks, hills and even a fertile valley to explore. Along the coastline are several interesting swimming spots.
Many years ago, Marsalforn port used to be the most important in Gozo, responsible for bringing in supplies. Passengers would board here to travel to Sicily and other continental ports. It was even considered abandoning the old Citadel in the island’s centre and building a new town overlooking the harbour.
