Xaghra, the island’s second largest village, is located centrally to the northeast side of the island. Xaghra is a lively village perched on one of Gozo’s three hills.
It is probably the most popular village among tourists due to its historical heritage, myths, lively square and sandy red beach, Ramla il-Hamra. Xaghra is one of the earliest inhabited parts of Gozo, being home to the Ggantija megalithic temples which date back to the year 3600BC.
Xaghra has fascinating caves such as Calypso’s cave, where according to myth, Calypso kept Odysseus as a `prisoner of love’ for seven years.
The village church is dedicated to Our Lady of Victories, locally known as il-Bambina, celebrated on the 8th of September, one of Gozo’s last celebrated feasts in the year.
