Birkirkara has the largest population on the island and is one of the oldest towns. Today, it has mostly modern buildings, although the town retains a traditional core with narrow streets, alleyways and typical Maltese houses. There are many places of interest in Birkirkara, amongst them the Old Railway Station which is located within a public garden. Other town features include the Wignacourt Aqueduct, built in the 17th Century, and St Helen's Basilica, housing Malta's largest church bell.

The Public Bus Terminus provides easy transport south and north. On Wednesday the town hosts an open market. The garden at the Old Railway Station is public. One of the biggest supermarkets in Malta is here as well.
