Kalkara is an unofficial fourth member of the so-called Three Cities, nestling inside the creek on the eastern side of Birgu. It retains the air of a sleepy, picturesque fishing harbour. There are a small number of shops and restaurants and the Esplora Interactive Science Centre is located at Bighi at the edge of the village.
Most residents in Kalkara are locals, and the area is currently sought after for investment. Some older properties are converted to rental accommodations or even B&Bs and boutique hotels. Kalkara is also home to the Malta Films Studio, and it has a lovely promenade.
