St Julian's is a major residential and tourist centre and is home to some of Malta's newest hotels. It is now an extension of Sliema, although it started life as a small fishing port based on Spinola and Balluta Bays. At the north end, St Julian's merges with Paceville, Malta's main nightlife centre where there are clubs, casinos and numerous restaurants, cafés and bars. Picturesque Spinola Bay is still used by fishermen, whose traditional boats are housed just below the restaurants. The bay is particularly attractive at night and as a venue for open-air dining.
St Julian’s is also considered the water polo capital of Malta. Numerous schools are based in this town, including the Sacred Heart Foundations (Primary and Senior School for girls) and EF Language schools.
At the base of Paceville, one of Malta’s rare sandy beaches can be found.
The St Julian’s feast, held annually, includes a unique sporting competition known as ‘ġostra’. The game is played as part of only a select few local festas across Malta, and St Julian’s is one of them. The traditional game involves participants clambering as far as possible along a sloping greased pole that is suspended above the sea in order to get to one of three flags dangled from the edge, each representing a certain prize.
Homes in this popular location are frequently priced higher than many other towns in Malta.
